Police believe a spate of deaths in the north of England has been caused by heroin laced with fentanyl , an opioid times stronger than street heroin, and its chemical cousin carfentanil , which is times stronger again and used by vets to tranquilise elephants. In particular, we now believe UK customers beyond the north-east region are likely to have received consignments of these drugs. They may not know how dangerous it is, both to them when they handle it, and to their customers. In the US, some street addicts deliberately use fentanyl and carfentanil for added potency, but many more take them unwittingly because they have been used as a cutting agent in the heroin they buy. The resulting risks of an accidental overdose can be enormous. Purple Drank One of the more unusual drugs around at the moment, purple drank was popularised in 90s hip hop culture, with the likes of Jay Z and Big Moe all mentioning it in their songs. It is a concoction of soda water, sweets and cold medicine, and is drunk due to cold medicines high codeine content, which gives the user a woozy feeling. Scopolamine Scopolamine is a derivative from the nightshade plant found in the Northern Indian region of South America Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela. It is generally found in a refined powder form, but can also be found as a tea. The drug is more often used by criminals due its high toxicity level one gram is believed to be able to kill up to 20 people making it a strong poison.

A specialist in America’s fringe subcultures, Theroux puts himself forward as a “normal” foil to his weirdo subjects, working under the assumption memorably satirised by Robert Altman in Nashville that the mantra “I’m from the BBC” answers all questions and opens all doors. At the same time, Theroux has always been willing to make himself part of the show, getting himself into uncomfortable situations for our amusement. He looks and acts — there is no polite way to say this — like a voyeur from central casting: Freddie Clare For its Australian release, Heroin Town has been fitted out with a specially-made prologue running more than half an hour, in which Theroux answers questions about what he does and why.
While this offers no deep insights into what makes him tick, it confirms that he sees himself essentially as an entertainer, with no agenda beyond demonstrating that porn stars, Nazis, Scientologists and so forth are people too. Part of a series of specials on American crime, Heroin Town itself brings Theroux to Huntington, West Virginia, a rundown industrial community where opiate abuse is rife one of every 10 babies, we learn, is born with an addiction. Theroux offers some broad-brush explanations for why this is so, in particular the over-prescription of legal painkillers, leading sufferers to medicate themselves in other ways once the supply dried up.
But the argument here has a degree of incoherence: At the same time, the film’s perspective is unavoidably skewed by the fact that “functional” addicts are far less likely to open themselves up to Theroux’s camera. The bulk of Heroin Town consists of close-up portraits of the down-and-out — describing their daily routines, regretting or defending their life choices, and occasionally shooting up before our eyes.
Theroux responds with a mix of presumably genuine unease and barely concealed delight at the solid gold material he’s getting; the strongest scenes are both harrowing and beautiful in a melancholy way, particularly when he visits a group of addicts living in tents down by the river.
The corner of Lennox and Victoria streets in north Richmond. Eddie Jim Since the end of last year, I have had to call triple zero numerous times for people who have overdosed in the streets around my area. It’s been 20 years since River Phoenix died on October 31, at the Viper Room, where the year-old Oscar nominee drank a “speedball” of heroin and cocaine dissolved into a drink before.
Responsible drug use and Drug liberalization In the case of recreational drug use , harm reduction is put forward as a useful perspective alongside the more conventional approaches of demand and supply reduction. While the vast majority of harm reduction initiatives are educational campaigns or facilities that aim to reduce drug-related harm, a unique social enterprise was launched in Denmark in September to reduce the financial burden of illicit drug use for people with a drug dependence.
Michael Lodberg Olsen, who was previously involved with the establishment of a drug consumption facility in Denmark, announced the founding of the Illegal magazine that will be sold by drug users in Copenhagen and the district of Vesterbro, who will be able to direct the profits from sales towards drug procurement. Needle-exchange programme The use of some illicit drugs can involve hypodermic needles.
In some areas notably in many parts of the US , these are available solely by prescription. Where availability is limited, users of heroin and other drugs frequently share the syringes and use them more than once. As a result, infections such as HIV or hepatitis C can spread from user to user through the reuse of syringes contaminated with infected blood. The principles of harm reduction propose that syringes should be easily available or at least available through a needle and syringe programmes NSP.
Where syringes are provided in sufficient quantities, rates of HIV are much lower than in places where supply is restricted. In many countries users are supplied equipment free of charge, others require payment or an exchange of dirty needles for clean ones, hence the name.

Continue I met up with a friend one Saturday afternoon at a bar for a football game. Soon after arriving I met J. He was cute, charming, and we seriously hit it off right away. Our afternoon of fun turned into a night out and me, my friend, J, and his friend bar-hopped, talked, laughed, danced, and played pool until the wee hours. Before heading home, J and I planned a date for that Thursday.
We exchanged numbers, kissed, said our goodbyes, and I left feeling quite pleased with myself, knowing that I had played my cards right.

But almost as quickly as the death toll spiked earlier this year, advocates and city leaders who had successfully pressed for the opening of three safe-injection sites realized they could not wait the months it would take to open them. And this Canadian city followed. A pop-up safe-injection site in a city park has since saved the lives of people.
When they finally manage to get past all of the chemical baggage that they had been carrying with them for so long, what you will find in most instances is that former addicts have just as many outstanding qualities as anyone else, and this can make them a joy to be around for family and friends alike.

By David Sack, M. In fact, addicts who are solid in their recovery can make excellent partners. But before you put yourself in a position to fall for an addict, there are a few things you need to know: For anyone considering dating an active addict, it is important to realize that love cannot conquer addiction. Before diving into a relationship, find out if your prospective partner is actively using drugs or alcohol, or if they display addictive or compulsive patterns in other areas e.
If they are in recovery, how long have they stayed sober? Are they actively working a program of recovery e. Someone with less than a year sober should stay focused on their recovery program, not dating. This guideline is designed to protect the addict as well as the people they might date. In the earliest stages, most recovering addicts are trying to figure out who they are, what they want and how to be in a healthy relationship.
