This article first appeared in the National Post. Gas consumers should be nervous. They did so largely because regulatory principles enabled them to maintain a competitive, financially viable and customer-oriented utility and the regulations were upheld at the same time as they were torn down in the electricity sector. But those principles are quietly being eroded and the costs of that erosion will start adding up. They argued that the cost should be just as clearly visible on monthly bills as that of charges like the Debt Retirement Charge and provincial handouts like the Clean Energy Benefit, the scrapping of the provincial sales tax rebate and, more recently, the Fair Hydro Plan. Unfortunately, the OEB directed the utilities to bury that charge among other delivery costs, hiding the monthly cost of a provincial policy. The utilities currently buy natural gas on the open market and pass that cost — with no markup — to consumers. Consumers in Ontario have directly benefited from those falling prices, as the gas utilities have directly passed those benefits on. So-called renewable natural gas, in contrast, is wildly expensive. Who will be on the hook for paying that significant premium?

Costs vary depending on the size of the home. You have to reimburse the vendor for pre-paid costs such as property taxes, filling the oil tank, and utility bills such as gas, hydro and water. How does the lender know you’re not over-paying for your home and, as a result, trying to borrow way more than you should be relative to the property’s actual value? If you throw your financial weight around – assuming you have any financial weight — they may waive this fee.
Provinces have complicated, multi-tiered taxation systems. In Ontario, for example, 0. Royal Lepage has a thorough list of these taxes and a calculator you may find useful. However, you may qualify for a partial GST rebate if your home is purchased to be your primary residence and depending on the sale price. Sometimes requested by the lender, a survey is done to verify the property’s boundaries, measurements and structures and identify any easements, rights of way or encroachments on your, or adjacent properties.

Global adjustment is a longstanding part of Ontario power bills that chiefly represents the difference between the market price for electricity and the usually higher rate the province owes power companies, either due to contract terms or regulatory decisions. The charge has shot up over the past decade, costing customers billions, and now makes up the bulk of the commodity cost of electricity in Ontario.
But according to the public accounts, those refinancing plans are being targeted for a change under Ford, whose government has been busy scrutinizing the financial situation left behind by the Liberals. Ford has also promised ratepayers a per-cent cut in the price of electricity on top of the per-cent reduction introduced by the Liberals, something the government has suggested can be achieved through moves such as cancelling pre-construction green-energy projects and returning to ratepayers the dividends the province receives for its ownership stake in Hydro One Ltd.

It must be free of any obstacles like ditches, trees, bushes, flower beds, large rocks, structures, snow, etc. The ground should NOT be soft so the truck doesn’t get stuck, subzero winter or dry summer are preferable times. Same applies to a three meter radius around the future pole location. It is customers’ sole responsibility to clear the path and make sure there are no obstacles and the surface is firm to hold the heavy truck.
Please confirm all these points in your email – please clearly mark the spot as per Hydro specs place a stick or ask a person to stand there and email us two or more pics of the exact pole location and around, taken from different sides of the property. And one or two pictures taken from a distance and showing the street overhead power line and the property or its part closest to that line.
Remember, three more images is better than one less. We neither do free visits, nor free on-site consultations – specify whether the existing overhead hydro supply line or suspended distribution power wires are located on the same side or across the street from the temporary pole – how many V 15Amp GFCI plugs do you need? Do you need any other receptacles of different volts and amps? We will call you with the price. Check your email as well – get and have valid locates or those “call before you dig” papers.

The year-old Strathroy, Ont. The return was attractive: The risk seemed non-existent: He had been given a conditional offer by the Ontario Power Authority under a plan proposed and backed by the Ontario government. In November and January he phoned Hydro One and was told his project should prove easy to connect. Last week he worked a frigid day outside, then went to the basement of his home to check his e-mail.
The form letter from Hydro One began with a pat on the back for the provincial government: Based on our analysis, we have determined that your project is impacted by system constraints. We regret to inform you that we are unable to provide you with an offer to connect your project at this time. Then I had to explain it to my wife. Then he designed and built a solar array mostly on his own, working as many as 15 hours a day since September — thousands of hours in total — until he opened the e-mail from Hydro One.
